Abandon Ship: Exploration Gameplay


Hello, it’s Gary from Fireblade Software here. In this video I wanted to talk about the exploration mode and how that ties in to the rest of the game. We’ve released trailers that showed some of the combat gameplay… …and the more monstrous elements in the game, so if you haven’t already seen those please check them out. This is the exploration mode. Here you navigate around, finding events and ports. Some events will – depending on your choices – put you into combat. Each exploration map is bordered by a picture frame. There are Sea Routes that allow you to move to other areas. These are behind locked gates that are opened by completing events. When moving to different areas you choose your destination on the map. While the main story will drive you to certain areas, outside of this you have freedom to explore and undertake side quests however you want. There are many places to discover that have nothing to do with the main story and have their own missions associated with them. Different elements combine to ensure the world is an interesting, diverse one to explore… …Unique locations… …Biomes… …Time of day… …Water roughness and weather… These all feed into the combat gameplay, influencing your tactics in battle. The regions in the world map are themed, for example the Uncharted Sea has very few ports, so exploring the unknown here is riskier. The Forsaken Sea contains a very volcanic area, which is a good example of how location can affect combat. If I fight within proximity of an active volcano, then that is something else I need to contend with in battle. We want you to constantly make interesting and difficult decisions in Abandon Ship, so systems can combine to push you right to the edge. But nothing feels as sweet as snatching victory from the jaws of defeat from the choices you made as Captain. Even with all of these factors stacked against you, ship destruction is not the end. If the Captain goes down with the ship, you become stranded. When this happens you must survive with deteriorating health. By escaping to a lifeboat you and surviving crew must deal with dwindling supplies and morale. Of course these aren’t great situations to be in, and you can still die from them. But, if you survive for long enough you can be rescued and continue your journey. As long as the Captain is alive, there is always hope. Thank-you for watching, see you next time.

    Hopefully better than Windward, and more like the timeless Sid Meier's Pirates.

    Water on the exploration/global map looks a bit glassy and unrealistic, but I'm sure it'll all be polished up. The picture frame idea is awesome though

    finally a Naval crew management game! was hoping for something more realistic like Age of Sail inspired, but this looks fun as well.

    Awesome, great job! The diverse locations and unlocking mechanism looks amazing (as long as there's enough variety in events as not to make it a grind to unlock these regions). Looking forward to where you take this!:)

    I cant wait to play it either. I few things bother me though a little bit:
    Why you always have such a huge ship. why not start with a small ship. and the ship itself looks a bit strange in the fights without the masts. but maybe i wont care while im playing it.

    Great work until now, keep the good work.
    Would also be interesting to have a side view of the ship interior with different possible upgrades, like a medical room,. armory, a inside 2nd row of cannons, captains cabin to study new skills, crew cabins giving options for faster heal/rest or have more sailors. armory to store research/make different/better weapons, a small jail for prisoners to convert … or not to sail with us…. just some ideas.

    I foresee one thing that will put me off. If all encounters are just the same thing. My ship in lower view of screen… or sailing around a map to get to events. These two things have been the major focus in all previews I've found, so it is as good a reason to think this is all the game has to offer. Such a wasted potential to be something more, should that be true.

    I refresh the steam page every day to see if it's available. Hope it will be available on GNU/Linux if the code isn't tied to the platform but will buy it regardless.

    You guys mention a "main story". is this a main story like how in FTL the main goal is to beat the rebels at the end but it mainly just gives the journey background purpose and direction? or is it more like there is an actual questline that you do eventually go through every run? Also, Will there be multiple races or just like 2? I have more questions but they are more likely to be answered soon 🙂 game looks flipping amazing and I can't wait to get my hands on it!
